Design Approach

Our approach at Nachusa Grasslands sought to balance inspiration and science. First, our designs invited visitors to embrace the simple beauty of the place, as well as the vision and hope that launched its restoration. Exhibits highlight the dedication of volunteers who protect and care for this important place while also inviting visitors to join this effort as stewards of the grasslands. Alongside this inspiring content, exhibits convey important research and discoveries about the plants, animals, and birds that populate this rare and nationally significant prairie ecosystem.

The exhibit design palette drew inspiration from the colors and species found in Nachusa Grasslands. Open mesh walls were designed to reflect the vastness of the prairie and frame vistas of the landscape dotted with bison. Sculptural elements made of weathering steel and brass depict grassland “heroes,” or the important and diverse species that make up this ecosystem. Sculptures include a full-size bison, prairie grasses, snakes, badgers, and other species. Layered alongside the sculptural elements, interactive graphics and media invite visitors into conversation about this invaluable place.
